That’s society’s expectations for you – as predictably unpredictable as a kangaroo on a trampoline.

For the lads, being a bit of a loner or a die-hard fan of trainspotting might be shrugged off as ‘boys will be boys,’ but what about the girls? They’re often the ninjas of the social world, flying under the radar, mimicking their peers like they’re preparing for an undercover mission in the school playground.

Boys might get the ‘cool nerd’ card, while girls often get handed the ‘shy bookworm’ one – and let’s be real, neither is a wild card you want in your UNO deck. But here’s the twist: these social scripts we’ve got can make or break the support our kids receive. If Johnny’s building a rocket out of Lego at recess, he’s a future Elon Musk. If Jenny’s doing the same, she’s ‘not playing nicely with others.’

So, dads, it’s our job to rewrite the script. Let’s cheer on Jenny’s rocket-building skills and make sure Johnny knows it’s okay to play with dolls, too. After all, diversity is the spice of life, and who doesn’t love a bit of spice on their barbie?
